Austria healthcare system faces crisis and long surgical waits
Austria's healthcare system is facing a deepening crisis characterized by long waiting times, physician shortages, and insufficient nursing staff. A strategy paper from the Austrian Health Insurance Fund (ÖGK) suggests potential cost-cutting measures, including introducing co-payments for doctor visits and eliminating cost reimbursements for private physicians (Wahlärzte).
In the region of Burgenland, the crisis is visible through extreme surgical waiting lists. As of October 2024, patients in Eisenstadt face average waits of up to 27 months for hip and knee replacements. While some regional clinics like Güssing and Kittsee report shorter wait times for similar procedures—ranging from approximately 8 to 9 months—significant disparities exist across the province. Other delays include long queues for cataract surgeries and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans.
