Austria heat wave worsens mental health, Switzerland promotes long showers for stress relief

A study by Gesundheit Österreich GmbH during the 2024 heat summer found that temperatures above 30 °C in Austria increase sleep problems, irritability and depressive symptoms. About half of respondents reported lower energy and a third felt less resilient. Psychologist Norman Schmid, head of the Austrian Psychologists Association in Lower Austria, warned that prolonged heat drains mental and physical resources, can trigger anxiety or depression, and advised open discussion, stress reduction and professional help when needed.

In Switzerland, psychologists highlighted that taking long showers can alleviate emotional stress. The sound of water masks external stimuli, relaxes muscles and soothes the brain, helping people process the day’s events. Experts recommend using shower time deliberately—slowing breathing and relaxing shoulders—to maximize the calming effect, while noting that persistent sadness or exhaustion should prompt medical consultation.
