Austria heatwaves impact tourism and social welfare services

Extreme summer temperatures in Austria have significantly impacted both the tourism sector and social welfare services. In Vienna, the Chamber of Commerce reports that record heat has altered the rhythm of the gastronomy industry. Business owners face rising costs due to increased cooling needs, while traditional revenue drivers like outdoor seating (Schanigärten) have become less reliable as guests arrive later and stay for shorter durations.

Simultaneously, the Caritas organization has seen a surge in demand for its 'climate oases' in Vienna and Lower Austria. These cooling centers, designed to provide refuge for homeless individuals and those living in poverty, have been so heavily utilized that emergency spaces were required on peak days. The organization noted that extreme heat poses severe health risks, including dehydration and heatstroke, particularly for vulnerable populations living in poorly insulated housing.
