Austria highlights investment potential in Montenegro amid EU accession talks

Austrian Ambassador to Montenegro, Christian Steiner, stated that Montenegro’s accession to the European Union could significantly boost trade exchange and provide local companies with easier access to the Austrian market.

Steiner identified several sectors with high potential for new Austrian investment, specifically highlighting energy, infrastructure, green transition, and utility services. He also noted opportunities in energy efficiency measures and support for women-led enterprises.

To attract stronger inflows of Austrian and European capital, Steiner emphasized the necessity of legal certainty, as well as simple and transparent business conditions. He noted that a high degree of legal security is a prerequisite for the successful conclusion of EU accession negotiations.

Economic ties between the two nations are already significant; approximately 30 Austrian companies operate in Montenegro, employing over 900 people in sectors such as banking, insurance, and renewable energy. This cooperation was further reinforced in August 2025, when Austrian Chancellor Christian Stocker and Montenegrin Prime Minister Milojko Spajić signed a political declaration of intent to deepen economic ties.
