Austria highway toll systems: Vignette vs GO-Box
In Austria, highway and expressway usage requires payment through either a vignette or the GO-Maut system, managed by ASFINAG. The method of payment is determined by the vehicle's technically permissible total mass (tzGM).
Vehicles with a tzGM of up to 3.5 tons, including cars, motorcycles, and light motorhomes, must use a vignette. These are available as physical stickers or digital versions, though the analog sticker option is scheduled to be phased out by February 1, 2027. Rates for 2026 vary based on vehicle class and duration, ranging from one-day to one-year options.
Vehicles exceeding 3.5 tons must use the GO-Maut system, which utilizes a GO-Box electronic device. Unlike the vignette, which is a flat fee regardless of distance, the GO-Maut is distance-dependent. Tariffs are calculated based on the distance traveled, the number of axles, and the vehicle's emissions, specifically regarding noise and air pollution levels.
