Austria implements ÖBB structural reforms and limits transport price hikes
The Austrian government, through a coalition of the ÖVP, SPÖ, and NEOS, has reached an agreement on the most significant structural reform of the national railway operator, ÖBB, in 23 years. The reform aims to increase efficiency and reduce annual costs by approximately 80 million euros by restructuring the management and corporate status of various divisions. Specifically, ÖBB-Personenverkehr and Rail Cargo Austria will transition from stock corporations to limited liability companies, allowing the ÖBB-Holding to exercise direct instruction authority.
In conjunction with these reforms, the government has decided to limit price increases for the Klimaticket Österreich and annual highway vignettes. Instead of a projected 3.6 percent increase based on inflation, both products will see a capped increase of 2 percent in 2027. This measure is intended to provide financial relief for commuters and public transport users, with Klimaticket holders expected to save roughly 22 euros per ticket compared to standard inflation rates.
