Austria implements emergency aid for farmers facing drought

Severe drought in Austria has led to significant fodder shortages, threatening the livelihoods of livestock farmers. To prevent emergency slaughtering and ensure economic stability, emergency measures are being implemented across the country.

In Upper Austria, a network involving the state government and agricultural organizations has activated a supply chain to deliver emergency hay. More than 260 truckloads of fodder, sourced from regions in Germany and Eastern Europe, have already been delivered to affected farms. This initiative aims to help farmers maintain their herds and avoid the loss of ongoing income.

Additionally, NÖM, Austria’s largest dairy cooperative, has launched an 8.1 million euro aid package. This fund is designed to help milk producers purchase necessary feed and seeds for rebuilding. The support is structured as a reimbursement for documented additional costs caused by the drought, with a maximum subsidy of 1.6 cents per kilogram of milk based on 2025 delivery volumes. NÖM officials stated that while the raw milk supply remains stable, the aid is crucial to provide planning security and prevent farmers from making hasty decisions due to economic distress.
