Austria implements school headscarf ban for girls under 14

Austria has implemented a ban on headscarves for female students under the age of 14 in both public and private schools. The regulation, supported by the ÖVP, SPÖ, and NEOS, aims to protect girls from religious and societal pressure, though it has faced significant opposition from various groups.

Integration Minister Claudia Bauer (ÖVP) has also advocated for stricter measures against “political Islam,” suggesting potential bans on organizations like the Muslim Brotherhood. This has sparked a debate between the federal government and Vienna Mayor Michael Ludwig, who argues that official Muslim representative bodies, such as the Islamic Community in Austria (IGGÖ), should be distinguished from extremist groups.

The ban has drawn criticism from the Equality Ombudsman, which warned of potential racial discrimination and constitutional concerns. Experts and educators remain divided; while some sociologists support the measure as a way to combat reactionary religious concepts, others, including school directors and legal experts, warn of difficult implementation and the possibility of the ban being overturned by the Constitutional Court.
