Austria implements headscarf ban for schoolgirls under 14
A new nationwide ban on traditional Muslim head coverings, such as hijabs and burqas, has come into effect in Austria for girls under the age of 14 in both public and private schools. The law, which initially applied to Vienna, Lower Austria, and Burgenland, aims to promote gender equality and child protection, though critics and religious organizations describe it as discriminatory and a violation of religious freedom.
In the first week of implementation, schools in Vienna reported several instances of conflict. While many cases were resolved through discussions with parents—some of whom were reportedly unaware of the new rules—other incidents have been referred to educational authorities. Parents who repeatedly violate the ban face administrative fines ranging from €150 to €800.
Educational experts have expressed concerns regarding the emotional impact on children, noting that the ban could create loyalty conflicts between students and their families. Meanwhile, political groups like the Left (LINKS) have called for boycotts and protests against the measure, labeling it racist. The Islamic Community in Austria (IGGÖ) is expected to challenge the law before the Constitutional Court, which previously overturned a similar ban in 2020.
