Austria implements nationwide mobile fingerprint scanning for police

Austrian police have launched the nationwide rollout of BioCapture, a mobile technology that allows officers to scan fingerprints directly using their service smartphones. Following a year-long pilot program involving 600 officers across Vienna, Lower Austria, and Styria, the application is now available to more than 32,000 personnel.

The technology enables contactless fingerprint capture via smartphone cameras, allowing for immediate comparison against existing databases. This capability is intended to facilitate identity verification during immigration controls and searches for wanted persons. Previously, individuals often had to be transported to a police station for such checks.

Interior Minister Gerhard Karner stated that the tool provides significant time savings and reduces administrative burdens by allowing officers to remain on the street. During the testing phase, over 2,500 scans were conducted. The Ministry of the Interior noted that the captured fingerprints are used exclusively for immediate database comparison and are subsequently deleted to ensure data protection.
