Austria implements new monitoring for lake ecology and reservoir safety

Austria is implementing new measures to address the ecological health and safety of its lakes and reservoirs. A new nationwide method is being used to systematically research the ecological state of lakes, evaluating shore structures, vegetation, and human impact to meet EU environmental standards. Key areas of concern include rising water temperatures due to climate change and habitat loss caused by dense construction along shorelines.

Separately, the environmental organization WWF has called for a climate security report for all Austrian reservoirs, citing risks associated with thawing permafrost. The concern is that melting permafrost could destabilize rock masses, potentially causing landslides into reservoirs and triggering flood waves.

In response, the energy company illwerke vkw stated that its reservoirs in Vorarlberg, including Spullersee Süd, Lünersee, Silvretta Stausee, Vermunt Stausee, and Kops Stausee, are being intensively monitored via satellite imagery and laser scanning. Geologists from the company maintain that current monitoring suggests only minor rockfall risks that do not pose a threat to the reservoirs.
