Germany recovers billions in Cum-Ex and Cum-Cum tax fraud cases
Germany is seeing increased progress in recovering funds from the Cum-Ex and Cum-Cum tax scandals. According to a report from the Federal Ministry of Finance to the Bundestag, tax recoveries for Cum-Ex cases have reached approximately 3.57 billion euros across 208 legally concluded cases. In the Cum-Cum sector, 96 cases have been finalized, resulting in 840 million euros being reclaimed or denied.
In a related legal development, the Frankfurt Public Prosecutor's Office has filed charges against four former Commerzbank employees for suspected serious tax evasion. The prosecutors allege the individuals were responsible for a tax loss exceeding 20 million euros stemming from stock trades conducted in 2008. The defendants include two British nationals, one German, and one American.
While authorities continue to secure billions, critics note that the recovered amounts remain a fraction of the estimated total damage, which is placed at roughly 28 billion euros.
