Austria Klimaticket usage increases as households save on commuting costs

Five years after its introduction, the Klimaticket has seen significant adoption across Austria. According to an analysis by the Verkehrsclub Österreich (VCÖ) and data from Statistik Austria, approximately 1.67 million households in the country now possess at least one annual public transport pass, an increase of about 320,000 compared to the 2019/20 period.

Regional usage varies significantly, with Vienna leading at 75 percent of households holding a pass, followed by Salzburg and Tyrol at 36 percent. In Styria, 28 percent of households utilize annual passes.

The VCÖ highlights substantial financial savings for commuters switching from cars to public transit. For example, on the Attnang-Puchheim to Linz route, annual fuel costs for 220 working days are estimated to be nearly five times higher than the cost of the Upper Austria Klimaticket. Other notable savings include approximately 3,800 euros annually for the Amstetten to St. Pölten route and 2,400 euros for the Judenburg to Leoben route.

To further encourage the shift toward sustainable mobility, the VCÖ is calling on employers to support staff through tax-advantaged public transport job tickets.
