Austria launches 'ida' AI chatbot for digital administration

Austria has introduced "ida" (Intelligent Digital Assistant), an AI-based chatbot designed to assist users with the ID Austria platform and other digital administrative services. Available on oesterreich.gv.at, id-austria.gv.at, and the ID Austria app, the assistant is intended to lower access barriers by answering questions regarding registration, e-IDs, digital signatures, and residency matters in natural language.

Currently, ida serves as an information and orientation tool. It answers general questions based on official government content and provides transparent citations for its sources. To ensure security, the system uses European technology from Mistral AI and is operated by the Austrian Federal Computing and Data Center. The developers noted that the AI does not have access to personal accounts, registers, or active legal proceedings, and it cannot currently submit applications or change personal data.

Digitalization State Secretary Alexander Pröll stated that the chatbot is intended to complement existing advisory services rather than replace them. Future developments aim to allow the chatbot to assist with submitting applications, following legislative changes to the General Administrative Procedure Act.
