Austria launches nationwide initiative for better address visibility

Emergency services and postal organizations in Austria have launched a nationwide initiative called ‘#DieRichtigeAdresse’ to improve the visibility and clarity of house numbers and door labels. The campaign, which follows a 2013 pilot in Tyrol, aims to prevent life-threatening delays caused by responders being unable to quickly locate specific addresses or apartment doors.

Key participants include the Austrian Post, the Fire Brigade, the Red Cross, the Association of Cities, and the Association of Municipalities. Günter Trinker, Vice President of the Austrian Federal Fire Brigade Association, described clear signage as ‘the simplest life insurance in the world.’

To assist emergency responders, officials recommend that house numbers be clearly visible from a distance and illuminated at night. For multi-unit buildings, doorbells should include surnames, apartment numbers, and floor levels. Additionally, residents are advised to ensure apartment doors are clearly labeled and to keep lights on and doors open after making an emergency call to facilitate immediate access.
