Austria launches ZIVA civil protection app

Austria has officially launched ZIVA, a new civil protection mobile application designed to prepare the population for various crisis scenarios. Described by Interior Minister Gerhard Karner as a unique tool within the European Union, the app integrates danger analysis, personalized preparedness advice, and live emergency alerts.

Developed by the Austrian Civil Protection Association (ÖZSV) in collaboration with 120 national organizations, the app follows a testing phase that began in May. The initiative aims to modernize crisis communication, moving away from traditional paper leaflets to a digital platform that can be used even offline.

The application features twelve different crisis scenarios and provides 400 personalized recommendations. Users can input up to five specific locations—such as homes, vacation properties, or relatives' residences—to receive tailored information. Functionalities include guidance on flood risks, explanations of siren signals, and advice on blackout preparedness. The app also maintains an automatic connection to Geosphere Austria, the national meteorological service.
