Austria logs 540,000 vignette violations in 2024, many by German‑registered cars

The Austrian highway operator ASFINAG reported that 540,000 vignette offences were recorded on Austria’s motorways and expressways in 2024. More than 130,000 of the offending vehicles carried German licence plates, and the operator expects about 670,000 offences in 2025. ASFINAG sells over 29 million vignettes each year and estimates that more than 98 % of vehicles have a valid vignette.

Drivers caught without a vignette face a replacement toll – 200 € for cars and light motorhomes, 100 € for motorcycles – and, if unpaid, administrative fines ranging from 300 € to 3 000 €. The Austrian road system also requires a separate distance‑based toll for heavy trucks and buses, as well as section tolls for tunnels such as the Brenner. Additional traffic rules highlighted for motorists include speed limits of 50 km/h in towns, 100 km/h outside towns and on autostrassen, and 130 km/h on motorways, a situational winter‑tyre requirement, a mandatory rescue lane in congestion, and strict mobile‑phone usage bans.
