Austria military reform faces pressure over civil service duration
Debate is intensifying in Austria regarding the reform of compulsory military and civil service. While the government's current plan proposes extending mandatory military service from six to nine months, the extension of civil service remains conditional. Under the proposed framework, civil service would only increase from nine to eleven months if the number of basic conscripts falls below 13,875.
Vorarlberg Governor Markus Wallner has criticized this delay, arguing that civil service should be extended immediately to ensure adequate disaster protection and security. He expressed dissatisfaction with the current political process and called for greater reform readiness from the NEOS party.
Additionally, the Austrian Officers' Society (ÖOG) has submitted proposals to ensure the reform achieves actual military readiness rather than just meeting political compromises. The ÖOG supports the reintroduction of mandatory militia exercises but advocates for a general extension of civil service to twelve months to maintain its role in security provision.
