Austria military service reform faces negotiation delays

The Austrian government is currently negotiating details regarding a proposed reform of compulsory military service. While a basic agreement was reached in late July to extend service to a total of nine months—including six months of basic service—the specific structure of the remaining three months remains undecided.

Defense Minister Klaudia Tanner (ÖVP) has indicated a preference for adding two months of mandatory troop exercises immediately following the basic service, followed by mandatory militia exercises distributed over ten years. However, the governing coalition has not yet finalized these details, and opposition parties, including the Greens and the Freedom Party (FPÖ), report they have not been invited to formal negotiations.

Because certain aspects of the reform require a two-thirds majority, the government needs support from at least one opposition party. Representatives from both the Greens and the FPÖ stated that communication has been minimal, suggesting that the government's goal of presenting the reform in the Council of Ministers by September 30 may not be achievable.
