Austria: Motorcyclist faces legal dispute over four-minute stop

An 84-year-old motorcyclist in Wöllersdorf, Austria, is facing a legal dispute after stopping for four minutes on private property containing a closed gas station to make a phone call. Lawyers representing the landowner demanded 374 euros in compensation for trespass, a claim the retiree has refused to pay on principle.

Following advice from the Austrian automobile club ÖAMTC, the man attempted to settle the matter by sending an apology and a 70-euro goodwill payment. However, the opposing lawyers rejected the amount and referred the case to a debt collection agency. The landowners claim that while the area is marked with warning signs, they have not installed physical barriers like ramps or chains due to high maintenance costs.

This incident is part of a broader pattern where surveillance cameras at the closed station have captured numerous drivers using the land for U-turns or checking fuel prices. Legal experts note that while unauthorized entry constitutes trespass, new Austrian regulations aim to limit the arbitrary costs landowners can charge for such incidents.
