Austria moves to tighten groundwater protection

Environmental groups CLAW and Ökobüro have submitted a request to Austria's Ministry of the Environment calling for comprehensive groundwater protection. They demand full implementation of the EU Water Framework Directive, the creation of a continuously updated water‑extraction register that records actual groundwater withdrawals, and a binding emergency plan for drought periods. The groups say current monitoring only records maximum allowable extraction and relies on spot checks, leaving many private and agricultural wells undocumented.

The SPÖ’s environmental spokesperson, Julia Herr, supports the groups’ demands and urges swift adoption of a water‑extraction register for large industrial and agricultural users. Herr stresses that transparent data are essential to protect Austria’s drinking‑water supply, which is 100 % sourced from ground and spring water, and calls for a legal priority for drinking water, a proactive water‑strategy to avoid usage conflicts, and revised licensing periods for major consumers.
