Austria naming dispute delays newborn's birth certificate

A couple from Upper Austria is facing significant administrative difficulties after the Salzburg registry office refused to register their newborn daughter's chosen name, Rianeva Viktoria, without a hyphen.

Authorities argue that the combined form “Rianeva” is not sufficiently established in official records to be accepted. The registry office suggested the hyphenated version, “Ria-Neva,” would be acceptable. However, the parents have rejected this, stating they want a unique Austrian name. The father, Roland, noted that they wish to avoid the name “Neva” because they perceive it as having Serbian or Croatian linguistic roots, which they claim does not reflect their heritage.

The parents have sought support from the German Language Society, which reportedly provided an opinion suggesting the combined name could be considered a valid personal name. Despite this, the registry office is not legally bound by the organization's opinion.

Because the name has not been registered, the infant has been without an official birth certificate since her birth on September 24. This delay has prevented the family from finalizing essential administrative tasks, including health insurance, residency registration, citizenship verification, and establishing legal guardianship.
