Austria outlines caravan toll rules and promotes car‑free tourism solutions

The Austrian motorway operator ASFINAG confirmed that trailers and caravans do not need a separate vignette; only the towing vehicle’s vignette is required as long as its permissible total mass does not exceed 3.5 tonnes. Vehicles over that limit must obtain a GO‑Box, with fees based on distance, axle count and emission class, and can be purchased digitally or at sales points. Non‑compliance attracts heavy fines, and ASFINAG recorded more than half a million vignette violations in 2025.

Meanwhile, the state of Tirol, together with Tirol Werbung, the regional transport association VVT and mobility firms POINT& and vionmo, launched the Europe‑wide initiative “Mobility & Tourism Innovations Tirol”. The programme seeks new solutions for the last‑mile connection, luggage transport and digital booking to make train‑based arrivals more convenient for tourists and locals. A recent study showed strong willingness among German visitors to choose sustainable travel even if it means longer journeys, supporting the region’s climate‑friendly tourism strategy.
