Austria places radicalized 16-year-old under intensive police surveillance

Austrian authorities have placed a 16-year-old male from Vienna under intensive daily surveillance involving approximately 20 police officers following his early release from prison. The teenager, who was radicalized via TikTok and linked to ISIS supporters, has a history of extremist activities and terror planning.

In early 2025, at age 14, he was suspected of planning an attack on the Vienna Westbahnhof railway station. Investigators discovered sketches of the station, drawings of individuals with machetes and automatic weapons, and instructions for bomb-making. Following a conviction, he was released on parole but was quickly re-arrested after an attempt to acquire a combat knife.

During subsequent legal proceedings, digital forensics revealed searches for machetes, axes, and explosive devices. He expressed a desire to die as a martyr. While serving time in Klagenfurt, he reportedly praised the perpetrator of a 2025 knife attack in Feldkirch. Despite warnings from prison psychologists that he remains 'extremely dangerous,' he was released in late August, prompting heightened monitoring by the Austrian Directorate for State Security and Intelligence and the Kobra special unit.
