Austria police warn of rising phone impersonation scams

Police in Austria, specifically in the Vorarlberg region, have issued a warning regarding an increase in fraudulent phone calls known as ‘Schockanruf’ (shock calls). Scammers impersonate police officers, prosecutors, or court officials to deceive victims.

The perpetrators claim that a relative or acquaintance has been involved in a serious traffic accident and is currently in custody. They use the resulting panic to demand immediate bail payments or to inquire about the presence of cash, jewelry, and other valuables in the victim's home. In many cases, scammers instruct victims to hand over these assets to a fake court official who will arrive at their residence.

Authorities advise citizens to immediately terminate any suspicious calls and never disclose information regarding bank accounts or physical valuables over the phone. Police emphasize that legitimate institutions do not request such details via telephone. If a caller claims a relative is in an accident, citizens are urged to contact that relative or their family directly to verify the situation before taking any action.
