Austria potato harvest drops significantly due to heat and drought
The 2026 potato harvest in Austria has seen a significant reduction due to extreme heat and drought. Statistics Austria estimates the total harvest at approximately 468,000 tons, a sharp decline from the 813,000 tons recorded in 2025 and well below the annual average of roughly 700,000 tons.
Agricultural representatives from the Lower Austria Chamber of Agriculture and the InteressenGemeinschaft Erdäpfelbau (IGE) noted that while spring conditions were favorable, intense heat and dryness starting in June severely impacted growth. Although rainfall arrived in September, it was too late to assist the development of the crops. Additionally, infestations of wireworms have caused further damage and increased operational workloads.
Lorenz Mayr, Vice President of the Lower Austria Chamber of Agriculture, emphasized the need for long-term water infrastructure strategies, stating that individual farm-level investments in irrigation are insufficient. Meanwhile, Michael Bachl of the IGE called for fair market conditions, requesting that producer prices for domestic goods remain competitive with imported alternatives during this difficult year.
