Respiratory infection season begins in Germany and Austria

Health experts in Germany and Austria are reporting the onset of the autumn respiratory infection season. In Germany, the Robert Koch Institute and the Helmholtz Centre for Infection Research note a rise in symptoms. Currently, non-influenza viruses such as rhinoviruses and parainfluenzaviruses are circulating, as evidenced by wastewater monitoring. Experts anticipate that waves of COVID-19, influenza, and RSV will follow as the season progresses toward the end of the year.

In Austria, authorities are managing delays in the delivery of approximately 868,000 doses of the Influvac influenza vaccine due to production and supply chain issues. To mitigate risks, the Austrian Ministry of Health is prioritizing vaccinations for high-risk groups, including those over 60, pregnant women, and infants. While the full delivery is expected by late November, nasal sprays for children and vaccines for seniors are already being distributed.

Medical professionals emphasize that while many respiratory infections are mild, they can lead to hospitalizations for immunocompromised individuals. Vaccination remains a primary recommendation for preventing severe outcomes from influenza and COVID-19.
