Austria proposes 100 km/h speed limit for EU highways

Günther Fehlinger-Jahn, president of the Austrian NATO Enlargement Committee, has proposed a 100 km/h speed limit on highways and major roads across the European Union. The proposal aims to improve road safety, reduce fuel consumption, and decrease dependence on fossil fuels by unifying speed regulations that currently vary significantly between member states.

While the proposal seeks to standardize limits, it is not currently a formal European law. Most European countries maintain highway limits between 120 and 130 km/h, such as Italy and Austria. The suggestion would represent a significant change for motorists accustomed to higher speeds, though some countries, like the Netherlands, already implement 100 km/h limits during specific time slots.
