Austria proposes new specialized high school for gifted students

Education Minister Christoph Wiederkehr (NEOS) has proposed the introduction of a new type of academic secondary school (AHS) specifically designed for gifted and high-performing students, set to begin in autumn 2027. Under the proposed legislation, students must pass an admission process involving standardized intelligence tests, interviews, and group exercises to assess motivation and work habits.

The new school model aims to provide targeted support through advanced curricula, accelerated learning content, and the ability to take university courses during secondary school. Additionally, students would receive coaching and mentoring to prepare for future careers. The proposal also includes greater flexibility regarding attendance requirements for students in the tenth grade and above to facilitate long-term projects.

In Wels, local politicians are addressing a shortage of existing secondary school placements. Following the rejection of a request for a new gymnasium by the federal ministry, the ÖVP party is proposing an urgent motion to examine expanding the Schauergymnasium by utilizing its attic space for additional classrooms.
