Austria: Protests and legal proceedings follow Vienna headscarf ban
Protests have erupted in Austria against a ban on headscarves for students under the age of 14 in Vienna. Demonstrations took place in Vienna, drawing approximately 3,000 participants, and in Bregenz, where about 1,000 people gathered to oppose the regulation.
In Vienna, the Education Directorate reported that 98 summonses have been issued to parents since the beginning of the school year. While 72 cases involved discussions with students and their guardians, 18 cases have been forwarded to district administrative authorities for ongoing proceedings. To date, no financial penalties have been imposed, though repeated violations can result in fines ranging from 150 to 800 euros or up to two weeks of imprisonment.
The implementation of the ban has faced challenges regarding the assessment of whether students wear the headscarf voluntarily or due to cultural and social influences. Critics of the law argue it contradicts the principle of equality and have initiated legal challenges, noting that similar regulations have previously been deemed unlawful by the Constitutional Court.
