Austria: Protests erupt in Vienna over student headscarf ban
Thousands of protesters gathered in Vienna to demonstrate against a new law implemented by the Austrian government that bans headscarves for students under the age of 14. The ban, which took effect with the start of the 2026 academic year, was enacted by the Triple Coalition Government formed in March 2025.
Organized by various civil society organizations, the protests moved from the Parliament to the Ministry of Integration and the Vienna Education Directorate. Demonstrators carried signs with slogans such as ‘The veil is our right’ and ‘I decide for myself,’ arguing that the law restricts fundamental rights and targets the country’s significant Muslim population.
Under the new regulations, students who violate the ban face a fine of 800 Euros. Government officials have defended the measure by claiming it protects minors from parental pressure to wear the veil. However, critics argue the policy marginalizes a segment of society, and the ban has been challenged in court on the grounds that it is unconstitutional.
