Austria rail services disrupted by bomb threat

An anonymous bomb threat targeting Austria’s South Railway line caused significant disruptions to the national transportation network on September 28. The threat, delivered via email to various institutions including the Austrian Federal Railways (ÖBB), specifically targeted the vital route connecting Vienna to Mürzzuschlag.

In response, police and security services increased presence at stations across Vienna, Lower Austria, and Styria. The State Protection and Intelligence Service (DSN) has joined the investigation into the vague email. While the Ministry of the Interior noted that such threats are sent frequently, the critical nature of the rail infrastructure necessitated heightened security measures, including increased patrols and station staff.

The security operations led to train delays and cancellations, particularly on the Vienna-Mürzzuschlag corridor and the Pottendorf route. ÖBB issued travel advisories to passengers, though officials clarified that while disruptions occurred, the rail network did not face a complete shutdown.
