Austria records 540,000 vignette violations in 2024 and outlines motorhome toll rules

The Austrian highway operator ASFINAG reported that in calendar year 2024 about 540,000 vignette offences were detected on Austria’s motorways and expressways, including more than 130,000 vehicles with German licence plates. For 2025 the operator expects roughly 670,000 offences, with over 200,000 involving German‑registered cars. Austria issues over 29 million vignette stickers each year, and the system will shift to fully digital stickers after February 2027.

For motorhomes, ASFINAG clarified that vehicles with a technical permissible total mass up to 3.5 tonnes follow the same vignette rules as cars. Heavier motorhomes must use a GO‑Box, an electronic device that records travelled kilometres and charges a distance‑based toll. The GO‑Box can be obtained for a fee and is available across the EU.
