Austria records historic high in business transfers

Austria recorded a historic high in business transfers in 2025, with 8,202 companies changing ownership. According to data from the Austrian Economic Chamber (WKO), this represents a 5.3 percent increase from the previous year and the highest number since records began in 1998.

Projections suggest a significant wave of generational changes is approaching. Approximately 52,500 small and medium-sized enterprises (excluding sole proprietorships) are expected to seek new owners by 2034. These businesses represent about 23 percent of all employers in Austria and are linked to roughly 705,000 jobs.

While 55 percent of transfers currently occur within families, this trend is declining, increasing the importance of external entrepreneurs. Research by KMU Forschung Austria indicates that new owners are driving growth, with 61 percent increasing turnover and 60 percent increasing investment compared to previous owners. The gastronomy sector saw the highest number of individual transfers.

In response to the upcoming wave of successions, the WKO is calling for political action, including tax relief and improved framework conditions to ensure smooth transitions.
