Austria records increase in road accidents, with Vorialberg topping alcohol‑related crash rate

In 2025 Austria logged 37,825 road accidents that caused personal injury, a rise of 1.9 % compared with 2024. The incidents resulted in 47,041 injured persons and 403 fatalities, both higher than the previous year.

Alcohol was a factor in 7.4 % of all crashes. Vorarlberg recorded the highest share of alcohol‑related accidents at 10.2 %, followed by Styria (9.0 %) and Burgenland (8.3 %). The summer months saw the bulk of deadly crashes, with July accounting for 56 deaths and August for 46. Nearly two‑thirds of all accidents occurred between May and October.

Saturday proved the riskiest day; the 5 July was the peak, with 25 alcohol‑related incidents. Men comprised 86 % of drunk drivers. Vorarlberg alone suffered 14 road‑death victims last year. "The most fatal traffic accidents in Austria occur in summer," noted Manuela Lenk, General Director of Statistics Austria.
