Austria reports over 8,000 road injuries and 67 deaths in Q1 2026

Statistics Austria disclosed that 8,011 people were injured on Austrian roads between January and March 2026, the highest number of injuries in a first quarter since 2019. The fatalities reached 67, with the largest number of deaths occurring in Lower Austria (24). Upper Austria recorded the most injuries (1,573) followed by Lower Austria (1,540). Vienna and Salzburg were the only states where injuries fell compared with the same period in 2025, and Vienna and Burgenland reported no traffic fatalities.

Car occupants accounted for 4,662 of the injured passengers, also a record high for a first quarter since 2019, and about ten percent suffered serious injuries. The data showed a clear link between injury severity and seat‑belt use; only 83 % of those who died were wearing seat belts. Men comprised 4,459 of the injured (56 %), the highest male injury count since 2017, and a larger share of them suffered severe injuries compared with women.
