Austria records record heat deaths and temperatures in summer 2026
Austria has experienced its hottest summer in 260 years of recorded history, resulting in a record number of heat-related deaths. According to estimates from the Agency for Health and Food Safety (AGES), approximately 995 deaths are linked to the heat during the months of June through August 2026. This figure represents the highest number since heat mortality monitoring began in 2017, surpassing the 2024 estimate of 948 deaths and the 2025 estimate of 428 deaths.
GeoSphere Austria reported unprecedented temperature levels, including the first instances of temperatures exceeding 41 degrees Celsius. A peak temperature of 41.2 degrees Celsius was recorded in Bad Deutsch-Altenburg on August 5, 2026. Additionally, Wieselburg set a new July record with 40.3 degrees Celsius.
The extreme temperatures and increased number of heat days have placed growing pressure on the healthcare system, with vulnerable populations such as the elderly being particularly at risk. AGES noted that these figures are statistical estimates rather than a continuous count, accounting for the fact that heat-related mortality effects can extend into subsequent days.
