Austria’s minister for European affairs, Claudia Bauer of the ÖVP, said the Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskyy has repeatedly tried to dictate a date for Ukraine’s accession to the European Union. She told Welt am Sonntag that a “turbo‑membership on request” is impossible and warned that the EU must carefully assess its capacity to absorb new members.
Bauer highlighted that Ukraine’s 39 million citizens and its markedly different agricultural structure would substantially change the EU and cautioned against creating a “two‑tier society”. She stressed that all candidate countries must follow the same rules and earn membership through their own efforts, noting that Kyiv still has extensive reforms to undertake, especially in anti‑corruption, rule of law and alignment with EU legislation. The EU began accession negotiations with Ukraine in June 2026, but officials expect full membership only after the war ends and likely not before the mid‑2030s, despite Zelensky’s push for entry by 2027.
