Austria reports high toll violations and lower fuel prices

Drivers traveling through Austria face strict toll requirements for motorways and expressways. According to ASFINAG, vehicles up to 3.5 tons, including cars and motorcycles, must use a vignette, which can be physical or digital. Heavy vehicles over 3.5 tons are subject to the GO-Maut distance-based toll. In 2024, approximately 540,000 vignette violations were recorded on Austrian roads.

Additionally, fuel prices in Austria are significantly lower than in neighboring Germany, particularly for petrol, where savings of up to 30 cents per liter are possible for cross-border commuters. This price difference is attributed to lower mineral oil taxes and a fuel price brake in Austria that was recently extended through the end of September. While German prices fluctuate, Austrian gas stations are permitted to increase prices only once a day at noon.
