Austria reports record motorcycle injuries, calls for full protective gear

In 2025 Austria recorded a new high of 4,584 motorcycle‑related injuries, the largest number since systematic monitoring began. The Kuratorium für Verkehrssicherheit (KFV) notes that 45 % of riders nationwide, and up to 76‑80 % in urban areas, ride without adequate protective equipment.

KFV head Klaus Robatsch stresses that “it is a misconception that low speed in town means no serious danger.” The organisation defines proper gear as a helmet, gloves, motorcycle boots and textile or leather clothing covering the torso and legs, and recommends additional air‑bag‑equipped jackets, vests or pants to reduce the severity of abrasions, bruises and fractures.

Since 2000 the number of light injuries has risen 55 %, while serious injuries have slightly declined. Motorbike registrations have grown to roughly 700 000, intensifying the need for effective protection, especially during hot weather, where breathable materials and lightweight air‑bag vests are now available.
