Austria reports rise in traffic accidents caused by driver distraction

In Austria, driver distraction has emerged as a leading cause of traffic accidents. Recent data indicates that 12,882 accidents were attributed to distraction, representing a 6.3 percent increase compared to 2024. These incidents resulted in 122 fatalities last year.

Mobile phone usage while driving is identified as a primary risk factor. Experts warn that even a few seconds of diverted attention can cause a vehicle traveling at 50 km/h to travel dozens of meters without control. Beyond mobile devices, the increasing prevalence of large touchscreen interfaces and complex digital menus in modern vehicles is also cited as a significant source of driver distraction. The ÖAMTC has issued calls for drivers to avoid using mobile phones to prevent increased reaction times and loss of vehicle control.
