Austria research addresses water scarcity and tourism impacts
Research in Austria is highlighting the impact of climate change on water resources and tourism. A master's thesis focused on the Neusiedler See indicates that rising temperatures and decreasing precipitation are expected to lead to more frequent medium and low water levels through 2050. A study involving 305 visitors found that the landscape significantly influences destination choice, with most participants preferring locations with high water levels, even when alternative attractions are available.
In a separate development regarding water conservation, research at the FH Wiener Neustadt Campus Wieselburg has demonstrated a method for recovering drinking water from sauerkraut brine. A study by student Richard Halbwachs showed that through a combination of membrane processes, evaporation, adsorption, and ion exchange, water and valuable ingredients can be effectively separated. In one tested Austrian processing plant, approximately 1,000 cubic meters of brine are produced annually, representing a significant potential source for water reclamation.
