Austria: School police call following headscarf dispute

Tensions regarding religious attire have escalated in Austria following an incident in Bregenz where a school called the police after seven female students refused to remove their headscarves. The situation occurred following a dispute involving a parent.

These events coincide with upcoming legislative changes in Austria. Starting with the 2026/27 school year, a ban will apply to students under the age of 14 in both public and private schools regarding headscarves that “veil the head according to Islamic traditions.” The government justifies this measure as a means to protect the development, self-determination, and equality of girls, though the policy has sparked debate regarding whether state intervention effectively addresses familial or societal pressure.
