Austria school data shows rising foreign student populations

New data from the Austrian Integration Fund (ÖIF) reveals significant demographic and linguistic shifts in the Austrian school system. In the 2024/25 school year, approximately 21% of students in Austria held foreign citizenship, a figure that has more than doubled since 2006.

In Vienna, the impact is particularly pronounced. In certain districts like Ottakring and Favoriten, the proportion of students with foreign citizenship approaches 50%. Religious demographics in Viennese primary schools show that approximately 39% to 42% of students identify as Muslim, making it the largest religious group, followed by Christians at 31%.

Linguistic challenges are a major concern for educators. Nearly half of all students in Vienna speak a non-German language at home. In Vienna's primary schools, roughly 20% of students require special German language support, while in some districts, the rate of students classified as 'extraordinary' due to insufficient German skills reaches as high as 77%. This has led to political calls for increased investment in language training and stricter integration measures to ensure students can meet educational standards.
