Austria school headscarf ban sparks student protests
Hundreds of students protested in Vienna and other Austrian states against a new school ban on headscarves for girls up to the age of 14. The demonstrations, organized by various youth organizations including the Socialist Youth, Action of Critical Students (AKS), and the Red Falcons, also addressed broader issues such as racism, sexism, and the need for increased educational funding.
Since the start of the current school year, there have been 252 recorded instances of non-compliance. Following initial reminders from teachers and meetings with parents, 87 cases resulted in formal reports. In Vienna, the Ministry of Education reported 210 meetings with the education directorate, leading to 53 legal reports to district authorities. These reports can result in fines ranging from 150 to 800 euros.
Integration Minister Claudia Bauer criticized the protests, stating that while freedom of opinion is a high value, it is “highly concerning” that certain organizations pressure young girls to demonstrate against their own freedom. She emphasized that girls should be able to grow up in Austria in a free, visible, and self-determined manner.
