Austria seeks better support for career-changer teachers

Since 2023, Austria has allowed career changers with relevant academic backgrounds and professional experience to teach in schools while completing pedagogical training. These individuals receive the same salary as traditionally trained teachers and currently account for 12 percent of new hires.

Research published in the journal ‘Erziehung und Unterricht’ suggests that these educators are driven by social values and a desire to contribute meaningfully to society rather than dissatisfaction with previous careers. Experts Claudia Schneider and Sabine Zenz argue that career entry should be viewed as a resource for renewing pedagogical professionalism and introducing diversity into the school system, rather than merely a tool to fill vacancies caused by teacher shortages.

However, concerns remain regarding the potential deprofessionalization of the teaching profession. Experts warn that if quality standards are diluted, training periods are shortened, or if new teachers are not sufficiently supported, the long-term integrity of the profession could be at risk.
