Austria sees record civilian service applications amid military reform
Austria has seen a record number of applications for civilian service, with 12,901 men registering between January and September 2026, a six percent increase from the previous year. Minister Claudia Bauer (ÖVP) attributed this surge to ongoing discussions regarding military service reform.
The proposed reform includes extending mandatory military presence service from six to nine months. Additionally, if the number of basic military service members falls below 13,875, civilian service would be mandatorily extended by two months starting the following year. Minister Bauer anticipates this threshold may be crossed as early as next year, potentially making the civilian service extension permanent by 2029.
Bauer warned of demographic challenges, noting that without changes, Austria could face a shortage of approximately 4,000 civilian service members annually by 2040. Proposed options for the service extension include completing the eleven months consecutively, splitting the service into nine and two-month periods, or performing voluntary work in lieu of the extra two months. The reform also introduces mandatory, specialized training for all civilian service members.
