Austria sees rise in summer rear‑end collisions, 5,027 accidents in 2024

The ÖAMTC reports that increased traffic, holiday trips and road works during the summer months raise the risk of rear‑end crashes in Austria. In 2024, rear‑end collisions accounted for 14 % of all person‑injury accidents, totaling 5,027 incidents that caused 16 fatalities and nearly 7,300 injuries. The peak period runs from June to September, with roughly 500 such accidents recorded each month.

Key factors identified include insufficient safety distance, driver fatigue, monotony on long journeys, stress and distraction. Young drivers aged 20‑29 were responsible for 26 % of rear‑end crashes, making them the most frequent perpetrators. The ÖAMTC advises motorists to maintain proper following distances, adjust speed to conditions and stay alert, especially on unfamiliar routes and in construction zones.
