Austria sees sharp rise in workplace violence and harassment

Workplace violence and harassment in Austria have seen a significant rise. According to data from the General Accident Insurance Institution (AUVA), approximately 1,750 occupational accidents resulting from violence were registered in 2025, representing an increase of roughly 65 percent since 2021.

Employees in the healthcare and social sectors, public transport, retail, and administration are particularly vulnerable. Reported incidents include verbal attacks, threats, sexual harassment, and physical assaults such as being bitten, kicked, or pushed. AUVA Prevention Director Caroline Krammer noted that the actual scale of the problem is likely much larger than the official figures suggest, as the current statistics only capture cases of physical violence that result in sick leave.

Psychological violence, verbal abuse, and sexual harassment are not included in these specific accident figures, leading to a high suspected dark number of unreported cases. Victims often suffer from physical injuries like bruises and scratches, as well as psychological consequences including stress, anxiety, and long-term health impairments.
