Austria study examines drug-related problems in community pharmacies
A research study has investigated the identification, classification, and documentation of drug-related problems (DRPs) within Austrian community pharmacies. DRPs are defined by the Pharmaceutical Care Network Europe as events or circumstances involving drug therapy that potentially interfere with desired health outcomes.
Addressing these issues is critical as they can negatively impact patient health and increase healthcare costs and hospital admissions. The research utilized a four-phase approach, beginning with a scoping review of European practices which revealed a lack of standardized approaches across the continent.
Subsequent qualitative research involving focus groups with community pharmacists indicated that while pharmacists view DRP management as a vital part of their professional role, their practices are influenced by various interacting behavioral barriers.
